Procedure
1.20 grams of the nitro dithioacetal from Step B in 46 mL of ethanol was treated with 18 mL of 40% aqueous NaOH and heated to 70° C. for 8 hours. The solution was diluted with water and extracted with CH2Cl2. The organics were combined, washed with water, saturated aqueous sodium carbonate, brine, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated to an oil. The oil was filtered through silica gel eluting with 10% CH3OH in CH2Cl2 to give the product as a yellow solid.
