1'-Benzoyl-3,4-dihydro-6-methanesulfonamido-spiro[(2H)-1-benzopyran-2,4'-piperidine] (5.44 g, 13.6 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (70 ml) and aqueous HCl (6N, 105 ml) was added. The mixture was heated under reflux for 24 hr, then the volume was reduced to 50 ml by distillation. Ethanol (200 ml) was added and the volume was reduced to 50 ml. Further ethanol (200 ml) was added, the volume was reduced to 100 ml and the mixture was cooled. The precipitate was collected and dried in vacuo to give the hydrochloride as a white solid (3.77 g, 83%). A sample was recrystallized from ethanol to give the hydrochloride as a white solid, m.p.=282°-285° C. (dec.).
