To a solution of [3-(4-bromophenyl)-3H-imidazol-4-yl]-methanol (5) (500 mg, 2.0 mmol) in dry methylene chloride (30 mL) was added MnO2 (1.74 g, 20.0 mmol) and the resulting mixture stirred overnight at rt. The suspension was then filtered through Celite and the filtrate concentrated under reduced pressure to give 3-(4-bromophenyl)-3H-imidazole-4-carbaldehyde (6). MS (ES+): m/z 251/253 (1/1) [MH+]. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz): δ=7.24 (d, J=8.7 Hz, 2H), 7.64 (d, J=8.7 Hz, 2H), 7.77 (s, 1H), 7.94 (s, 1H), 9.78 (s, 1H).
