A mixture of tert-butyl (2R,3S)-3-({3-cyano-5-[(dipropylamino)carbonyl]benzoyl}amino)-2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyl(3-methoxybenzyl)carbamate (XXXVI, EXAMPLE 585, 0.080 g, 0.122 mmol), dichloromethane (1 mL), and methanol saturated with hydrochloric acid (1 mL) is stirred for 8 hours, after which time the solvents are removed under reduced pressure. A few drops of methanol, followed by ether, gives the title compound, MS (ESI+) for C33H40N4O4 m/z (M+H)+=557.5
