2-Methyl-3-nitrobenzaldehyde (1.23 g, 7.5 mmoles), methyl 4-fluoro-3-oxobutanoate (1.0 g, 7.5 mmoles) and 1-methylethyl 3-amino-2-butenoate (1.07 g, 7.5 mmoles) were heated with stirring at 80° for 2.5 hours. The cooled residue was chromatographed twice on silica eluting first with ethyl acetate/petroleum ether (60°-80°) and then with ethyl acetate/methylene chloride. The title compound (0.61 g) was obtained by crystallisation from a mixture of petroleum ether (60°-80°) and 2-propanol mp 132°-133°.
