Procedure
A suspension of lithium (1-ethyl-2-phenyl-1,2-azaborolide) (1C), 0.80 g, 4.52 mmol) in 25 mL of ether was added to a suspension of ZrCl4 (0.51 g, 2.19 mmol) in 25 mL of ether at −50° C. The mixture was stirred for 8 h, during which time the mixture warmed to 25° C. The mixture was filtered through diatomaceous earth and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was washed with ether and dried to obtain the desired product (0.65 g, 59 percent). The 1H NMR spectra indicated that the product is a mixture of two diasteromers in the ratio of 4:1. Spectral signals for the major isomer are reported.
