4′-C-(1,1′-diphenylmethylaminomethyl)thymidine (3) (0.65 g, 1.5 mmol) was dissolved in absolute ethanol (50 mL). Cyctohexene (12 mL), glacial acetic acid (5 mL) and 5%-palladium on charcoal (0.6 g) were added and the mixture heated under reflux with stirring. The solution was heated for 5 hours and then allowed to cool to ambient temperature. Palladium catalyst was removed by filtration through celite and the filtrate was concentrated under vacuum to give the crude title compound (4), which was used in the following step without further purification.
