Procedure
2 g 6-azido-2,3-dihydroxyquinoxaline is suspended in 100 ml glacial acetic acid. To the suspension is added 16 ml fuming nitric acid at 24° C. The mixture is stirred at 24° C. for 4 h giving a precipitate of 1.9 g (78%) 6-azido-2,3-dihydroxy-7-nitroquinoxaline. IR: a peak at 2120 cm−1. NMR: two singlets (7.0 and 7.7 ppm downfield from TMS).
