Procedure

A mixture of intermediate (16) (0.0059 mol) in methanol (100 ml) was hydrogenated with palladium on carbon (1 g) as a catalyst. After uptake of hydrogen (1 equivalent), the catalyst was filtered off, the filtrate was evaporated and crystallized from ACN, yielding 0.6 g of tetrahydro-1-[4(hydroxymethyl)-4-piperidinyl]-2(1H)-pyrimidinone (intermediate 17, mp. 162° C.).
