1-phenylisatin (51.8 mg, 0.23 mmol) and 5-aminoindole (31 mg, 0.23 mmol) were mixed and heated at 140° C. for 2 h. The resulting crude product was purified by preparative TLC using ethyl acetate/hexane (6:4) as the eluent, giving the desired product as a yellow solid (10.8 mg, 14%). 1H NMR (400 MHz): δ 8.28 (s, 1H), 7.57 (t, J=7.7, 2H), 7.49–7.40 (m, 6H), 7.29–7.23 (m, 1H), 7.03 (dd, J 8.5, 1.7, 1H), 6.98 (d, J=7.6, 11H), 6.83 (d, J=8.0, 1H), 6.74, J=7.6, 1H), 6.59 (s, 1H); ESI-MS m/z found 338 (MH+).
