Procedure
To a solution of 7-methoxy-1,1-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (0.99 g, 5.2 mmol) in glacial acetic acid (30 mL) at 0° C. was added slowly bromine (0.5 mL, 10.4 mmol), and the resulting solution was allowed to slowly warm to room temperature while being stirred. After 48 h, the reaction mixture was quenched with a saturated solution of Na2S2O3 and extracted with ethyl acetate, and the combined extracts were dried (MgSO4). The solvent was removed under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by flash column (hexane:ethyl acetate=95:5) to afford 0.5556g (40%) of the title compound as a clear oil.
