Procedure
Phosphorus pentasulphide (0.7 g, 3.1 mmol) was added portionwise to a stirred suspension of 8-[5-(4-methylpiperazine-1-sulfonyl)-2-propoxyphenyl]-3-propyl-3,7-dihydropurine-2,6-dione (1.5 g, 23.3 mmol) in pyridine (15 mL) and the resulting mixture stirred under reflux for 3 hours, then evaporated under reduced pressure to give crude 8-(2-propoxyphenyl)-3-propyl-6-mercapto-3,7-dihydropurin-2-one (1.38 g) which was used directly in the next step.
