Reaction Steps
Bromine (29.3 mL) was added dropwise to a mixture of 2,2,4,6,7-pentamethyl-3-(4-methylphenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran (145 g), sodium acetate (50.9 g) and acetonitrile (2175 mL) at 0 to 5° C. The mixture was stirred at 0 to 10° C. for 1 hour and water (725 mL) was added thereto. Precipitated crystals were filtered to obtain the title the compound (175 g, 94.2%).
