Procedure

A solution of 9H-fluoren-9-ylmethyl[6-(aminocarbothioyl)-2-isobutyl-1-oxo-4-phenyl-1,2-dihydro-3-isoquinolinyl]methylcarbamate (Example 194(2)) (2.35 g, 4 mmol) and ethyl bromopyruvate (1.56 g, 8 mmol) in ethanol (20 ml) was refluxed under heating for 1 h. The reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give ethyl 2-[3-[[[(9H-fluoren-9-ylmethoxy)carbony]amino]methyl]-2-isobutyl-1-oxo-4-phenyl-1,2-dihydro-6-isoquinolinyl]-1,3-thiazole-4-carboxylate (1.92 g, 70.3%) as crystals.
