To a solution of 3-(1-cyano-1-methylethyl)-N-{4-cyano-3-[(5-nitropyridin-2-yl)oxy]phenyl}benzamide (0.65 g, 1.59 mmol) in methanol (20 mL) was added 10% palladium-carbon (130 mg), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 20 hr under a hydrogen atmosphere (2.8 atm). The insoluble material was filtered off, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound (0.57 g, 90%) as a pale-yellow oil. This was used for the next reaction without further purification.
