To a mixture of 4-hydroxy-3,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (6.5 g, 20.0 mmol) and triethylsilane (5.0 mL) at 25° C. was added trifluoroacetic acid (2.5 mL) dropwise. The resulting mixture was stirred at 25° C. for 4 h. Then the reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was extracted with ethyl acetate (2×200 mL), washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution (2×100 mL), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was triturated with methanol. The resulting precipitate was collected, dried in vacuo to afford 3,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (1.5 g, 24%) as a white solid: LC/MS m/e calcd for C20H23NO2 (M+H)+: 310.40, observed: 310.1.
