Step AAB (1): A solution of bromine (0.068 ml, 1.328 mmol) in CCl4 (2 mL) was added dropwise, over a period of 10 min, to a solution of 2-methyl-2-phenylcyclohexanone (250 mg, 1.328 mmol) in CCl4 (8 mL) at 0° C. The resulting solution was allowed to warm to rt and stir for 2 hr. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo to afford 6-bromo-2-methyl-2-phenylcyclohexanone. The crude product was used for subsequent chemistry without purification or characterization.
