Step C In a manner similar to the method described in Example 1a, glycine tert-butyl ester (1.3 g, 10 mmol) was reacted with 3-methyl-3-phenyl-butyraldehyde (1.8 g, 11 mmol) in CH2Cl2 at room temperature for 18 h to give [[3-methyl-3-phenyl-but-(E)-ylideneamino]-acetic acid tert-butyl ester as a colorless oil (2.3 g, 93%).
