Reaction Steps
Step A To a suspension of L-(−)-malic acid (Aldrich) (10.3 g, 77 mmol) in 2,2-dimethoxypropane (20 mL) was added p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (0.4 g). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 min. The mixture was partitioned between water and dichloromethane. The organic layer was separated, the aqueous layer was extracted with dichloromethane. The organic layers were combined, washed with water, brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated to give ((S)-2,2-dimethyl-5-oxo-[1,3]dioxolan-4-yl)-acetic acid as a white solid (10.1 g, 75%).
