KCN (2.73 mmol, 1.2 equiv.) was added to a solution of (2-(4-methoxy-2,6-dimethylphenylsulfonyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolin-7-yl)methyl methanesulfonate (2.28 mmol, 1 equiv.) in EtOH/water (10 ml), and the mixture was refluxed for 24 h. The reaction mixture was then cooled and diluted with ethyl acetate. Extraction with sat. FeSO4 solution, water and sat. NaCl solution was carried out, and the organic phase was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The resulting crude product was purified by column chromatography (silica gel). Yield: 71%
