Procedure

To a soln. of ethyl 1-(2-methoxyphenyl)-4-methyl-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxylate (30 mg, 0.115 mmol) in MeOH (2 mL) was added 3 N sodium hydroxide (2 ml, 6.00 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred at r.t for 2 hrs, then evaporated to remove the solvent. The residue was taken up in EtOAc and water, acidified with 6N HCl to pH=2, partitioned and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated to afford 1-(2-methoxyphenyl)-4-methyl-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxylic acid (23 mg, 0.094 mmol, 82% yield), which was taken into the next reaction without further purification.
