N-bromosuccinimide (348 mg, 1.96 mmol) is added to a solution of 8-chloro-6-methyl-imidazo[1,2-a]pyrazine (337 mg, 2.02 mmol) in DCM (6.1 mL) and the reaction is stirred at 40° C. for 10 min and then at room temperature for 1 h 30 min. The reaction mixture is diluted with DCM and washed twice with 4 mL of Na2CO3 sat., dried with MgSO4 anh., filtered and concentrated in vacuo to give 3-bromo-8-chloro-6-methyl-imidazo[1,2-a]pyrazine as a yellow solid (470 mg, 95%).
