4-Cyclohexylnitrobenzene (22.6 g, 0.11 mol) and N-bromosuccinimide (21.6 g, 0.12 mol) were suspended in tetrachloromethane (200 mL) and a catalytic amount of dibenzoylperoxide was added. The reaction mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 4.5 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue dissolved in ethyl acetate (400 mL) and washed with water (100 mL). The aqueous phase was extracted with ethyl acetate (200 mL) and the combined organic phases were washed with water (3×150 mL), dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was crystallised from ethyl acetate and heptane to give 18.4 g of 1-(bromocyclohexyl)-4-nitrobenzene.
