Reaction Steps

Bretylium dodecylsulfate was prepared as an example of the preparation of bretylium salts of hydrophobic or weakly hydrophilic anions. A 25.5 g sample of the bretylium bromide solution prepared above was mixed under vacuum in a rotary evaporator, reducing its mass to 7.48 g by evaporation. The removed, volatile material was ethyldimethylamine and water. Bretylium bromide is nonvolatile. This material contains approximately 2.6 mmoles of bretylium bromide per gram, based on the original concentration. To 2.0 g of this material (5.2 mmoles of bretylium bromide) were added 2.0 g (6.2 mmoles) sodium dodecylsulfate, 2.0 g of distilled water, and 19 g of chloroform. A two phase mixture resulted. This was agitated vigorously, then allowed to separate. Previous distribution experiments suggested that bretylium dodecylsulfate would be concentrated in the chloroform phase, and sodium bromide in the aqueous phase. The chloroform was evaporated at about one torr; first, for 24 hours, at room temperature; then, at 43° C. for one hour. The residue was 1.7 g of very viscous, colorless, cloudy liquid (3.4 mmoles as bretylium dodecylsulfate, 65% yield).
