Procedure
2.2 g of ethyl 3-[3-(hydroxymethyl)-4-methoxyphenyl]-2-isopropoxypropanoate was dissolved in 15 ml dimethoxyethane. 1.2 ml phosphorus tribromide was added thereto under ice-cooling, followed by stirring at room temperature for 4 hours. The reaction solution was diluted with ether and washed with water. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and the solvent was evapoarated. The residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography, to give 2.6 g of ethyl 3-[3-(bromomethyl)-4-methoxyphenyl]-2-isopropoxypropanoate from fractions eluted with hexane-ethyl acetate (4:1).
