To solution of 5-(ethoxycarbonyl)-2-(4-fluorobenzyl)-8-hydroxy-1-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2,6-naphthyridin-6-ium trifluoroacetate (0.020 g, 0.045 mmol; see Example 8, Step 4) in CCl4 (2 mL) is added N-bromo succinimide (0.017 g, 0.095 mmol) and AIBN (catalytic). The reaction is heated to 80° C. for 1 hour, then concentrated and chromatographed on reverse phase to give the product.
