Reaction Steps

To a solution of compound 11.1 (1.0 mmol) in benzene (2.0 mL) is added N-bromosuccinimide (1 equivalent) and benzoyl peroxide (0.33 equivalent). The reaction mixture is refluxed overnight under N2. After cooling to room temperature, the solution is diluted with EtOAc, washed with H2O, brine, dried, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude product is purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel to provide 5-bromomethyl-2-(4-chloro-benzoylamino)-benzoic acid methyl ester (compound 11.2).
