To benzonitrile 21 (1.7 g 3.8 mmol) in EtOH/EtOAc was added 200 mg of Pd—C and flushed with H2 three times. The mixture was stirred under H2 at r.t. for 72 h. The mixture was filtered through celite and the filtrate was concentrated. Extraction of the filtrate with EtOAc and washing with 2NHCl, sat. NaHCO3, sat. NaCl, followed by purification with silica gel gave 350 mg of the desired product. Yield: 26%.
