Reaction Steps
A mixture of 2-aminobenzothiazole (2.104 g, 13.6 mmol) and 4-methylbenzyl chloride (2.25 mL, 12.5 mmol) was refluxed for 8 hours in methoxyethanol in the presence of a catalytic amount of sodium iodide (220 mg, 1.46 mmol). After cooling a precipitate formed which was filtered and rinsed with ether to give 35% yield: mp 243-248° C.; 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6) 2.26 (s, 3H), 5.65 (s, 2H), 7.20 (dd, 4H), 7.39 (t, 1H), 7.48 (t, 1H), 7.55 (d, 1H), 8.02 (d, 1H); HR-MS (EI) m/z 254.0870 (M+).
