Procedure

3-(4-Ethoxycarbonylmethylbenzyl)-5-phenyl-1H-pyrazolo[4,3-c][1,8]naphthyridin-4 (5H)-one (110 mg, 0.25 mmol, prepared in Example 32) was dissolved in DMSO (3 ml) at 50° C., admixed with 50% sulfuric acid (2 ml) at 100° C., and then heated under reflux for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was admixed with water, and filtered to give precipitates which were dried to afford 3-(4-carboxymethylbenzyl)-5-phenyl-1H-pyrazolo[4,3-c][1,8]naphthyridin-4 (5H)-one (96 mg, 93%).
