Procedure

A solution of 0.25 g of 5-(2,4-difluoro-phenoxy)-6-methoxy-2-methylsulfanyl-quinoline in 10 mL of methanol was treated with aqueous OXONE™ solution (1.3 g in 5 mL H2O) and stirred for 2 hours at room temperature. The reaction mixture was partitioned between water and dichloromethane, the organic layer was dried (MgSO4), and the solvent was removed under vacuum. The solid residue was dissolved in a minimum amount of dichloromethane and washed through a silica gel plug to remove the baseline impurities. Elution with 30% EtOAc/hexane yielded 0.11 g (38%) of 5-(2,4-difluoro-phenoxy)-2-methanesulfonyl-6-methoxy-quinoline 701 ([M+H]+)=366, as white crystals.
