A solution of 3-(2-chloro-6-fluorophenyl)-1-methyl-5-[5-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)thien-3-yl]-1H-1,2,4-triazole (0.45 g, 1 mmol) and N-chlorosuccinimide (0.15 g, 1.1 mmol) in methylene chloride/glacial acetic acid (1:1, 2 mL) was refluxed under nitrogen for 2 days, cooled to room temperature, poured into water (10 mL) and extracted with ether (3×20 mL). The combined ethereal extracts were washed with water (3×30 mL), saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate (50 mL) and brine (30 mL), dried over magnesium sulphate and chromatographed on silica to afford the product as a white solid (0.37 g, 76%): mp 53–54° C.; 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.79 (s, 1H), 7.71 (d, 2H), 7.60 (d, 1H), 7.54 (t, 1H), 7.44 (s, 1H), 7.30–7.40 (m, 2H), 7.11 (t, 1H), 4.05 (s, 3H); EI/MS 472 m/e (M+); Calcd. for C20H11Cl2F4N3S: C, 50.9; H, 2.35; N, 8.90; Found: C, 50.9; H, 2.49; N, 8.82.
