A mixture of 9,9-bis(n-octyl)fluoren-2-yl-boronic acid (2a) (2.0 g, 4.60 mmol), 2,7-dibromo-9,9-bis(n-octyl)fluorene (3a) (4.0 g, 7.32 mmol), Pd(PPh3)4 (50 mg, 0.043 mmol), Na2CO3 (2.0 M aqueous solution, 12.0 mL, 24.0 mmol), and toluene (20 mL) is stirred at 90° C. for 2 days. After the mixture is cooled to room temperature, 200 mL of petroleum ether is added to the reaction mixture. The organic portion is separated and washed with brine before drying over anhydrous MgSO4. The solvent is evaporated off, and the solid residues are purified by column chromatography on silica gel with petroleum ether to afford 7-bromo-9,9,9′,9′-tetra-n-octyl-2,2′-bifluorene (4a) as a white solid (2.52 g, 66%).
