3-(3,4,5,6-Tetramethoxy-2-methylbenzyl)-2-benzyloxybenzoic acid (0.52 g, 1.15 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (10 ml) and after adding thereto an ethanol suspension (3 ml) of 5% Pd—C (0.15 g), the solution was stirred at room temperature for 16 hours in a hydrogen stream. The reaction solution was filtered, the filtrate was concentrated, and the obtained residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (chloroform:methanol=9:1) to obtain the titled compound (0.41 g, 1.13 mmol, 98%).
