A mixture of 3.5 parts of 4-imino-2-thiazolidinone, 4.4 parts of 1,3-diiminoisoindoline and 100 parts of methanol was stirred under an atmosphere of nitrogen at room temperature for three hours and then at reflux temperature for two hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to 25° C and the solid therein was collected by filtration, washed with fresh methanol and dried in vacuo at 50° C to obtain 5.4 parts of 1-imino-3-(2-oxo-4-imino-5-thiazolidinylidene)isoindoline as a yellow powder melting at 346°-348° C (dec).
