Participants
| Role | Name | HCID | Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reactant | Benzyl Alcohol | HCID 244 | — |
| Reactant | Aniline | HCID 6115 | — |
| Reactant | Triphenyl phosphite | HCID 7540 | — |
| Solvent | Water | HCID 962 | — |
| Product | Benzylaniline | HCID 66028 | 90% |
Reaction Steps
200 parts of aniline, 108 parts of benzyl alcohol and 10 parts of triphenyl phosphite are heated for 20 hours at 240° C in a stirred autoclave. The autoclave is then let down and the water of reaction which has formed, the excess aniline and the unconverted alcohol are distilled off under reduced pressure. 165 parts of N-benzylaniline, corresponding to a yield of 90% of theory, distil at a boiling point of 125° C/0.2 mm Hg.
