Procedure
Ethyl DL-α-amino-(5,6-dihydro-1,4-oxathiin-2-yl)-acetate (37 g.) is dissolved in methanol (350 cc.) and N sodium hydroxide solution (182 cc.) is then added. The reagents are left in contact for 3 hours at a temperature of about 4° C., and the solution is then concentrated under reduced pressure (20 mm.Hg) to about 1/3 of the initial volume. It is then acidified to pH 4.5, at a temperature of about 5° C, by adding 4 N hydrochloric acid. A product crystallises. The mixture is stirred for 15 minutes and the precipitate is then filtered off; DL-α-amino-(5,6-dihydro-1,4-oxathiin-2-yl)-acetic acid (19.4 g.) is thus obtained in the form of white crystals melting at about 270° C.
