A solution of the above benzimidazole (195 mg, 0.41 mmol) in a 1:1:1 mixture of water, acetic acid and H2SO4 (1.5 mL) was heated at 100° C. for 3 h. The reaction mixture was cooled and diluted with water. The precipitate was collected and washed with water. The collected yellow solid was purified by chromatography on SiO2 in CH2Cl2 /MeOH (20:1) to give the title compound (70 mg, 43%) as a light yellow solid. Mp>300° C. (dec.), MS (CI) m/z 399 (M++H).
