Reaction Steps

To a stirring solution of 2-bromo-pyridine-3-carbaldehyde(0.68 g, 3.6 mmol) were added 1-phenyl-1,3,8-triazaspiro[4.5]decan-4-one (0.846 g, 3.6 mmol), and acetic acid(1.1 g, 18 mmol) in THF (40.0 ml) and sodium triacetoxyborohydride (1.55 g, 7.3 mmol) and the resulting reaction mixture stirred at room temperature overnight. Water (50 ml) was added and the reaction mixture solution was extracted with ethyl acetate three times. The combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4. The solvent was removed and the resulting residue was purified over silica gel column eluted with methylene chloride (97%), methanol(2%), acetic acid(1%) and then with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution to yield 8-(2-bromo-pyridin-3-ylmethyl)-1-phenyl-1,3,8-triazaspiro[4.5]decan-4-one as a white solid.
