Procedure

A mixture of 4, 5, 6-trichloropyridine-2-carboxamide (10.4 g, 46 mmol) and 2,4-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-dithia-2,4-diphosphetane-2,4-disulfide (Lawesson's Reagent, 22.0 g, 54 mmol) in toluene (150 mL) was heated under reflux for two hours. The reaction mixture was cooled, diluted with water (250 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×150 mL). The organic phase was dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated. The residue was purified by column chromatography (20% ethyl acetate in hexanes) to give 4, 5, 6-trichloropyridine-2-carbothioamide (6.5 g, 27 mmol): mp 168-169° C.
