A solution of OXONE, (trade mark of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.,Inc), (800 mg) in water (4.5 ml) was added to a solution of 4-(4-bromo-2-fluoroanilino)-6-methoxy-7-(3-methylthiopropoxy)quinazoline (300 mg, 0.66 mmol), (prepared as described in Example 31), in methanol (15 ml) and the mixture was stirred for 4 hours at ambient temperature. The mixture was diluted with methylene chloride, was washed with aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate solution, dried (MgSO4) and the solvent was removed by evaporation. The residue was triturated with ethyl acetate/hexane, collected by filtration and dried to give 4-(4-bromo-2-fluoroanilino)-6-methoxy-7-(3-methylsulphonylpropoxy)quinazoline (235 mg, 73%).
