Sodium hydroxide (1M, 2.5 ml, 2.5 mmol) was added to a solution of ethyl 2-ethoxy-3-{4-[2-(9H-fluoren-9-yl)-ethoxy]-phenyl}-propionate (0.19 g, 0.44 mmol) in ethanol (5 ml) and the mixture stirred at room temperature for 20 h. The resulting mixture was partitioned between water (20 ml) and dichloromethane (20 ml), acidified to pH 1 by adding 1N hydrochloric acid, and the organic phase collected. The aqueous phase was further extracted with dichloromethane (3×20 ml) and the combined organics were washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated to give the title compound as a waxy solid; 0.17 g (95%).
