Procedure
To a solution of methyl 6-methylnicotinate (25 g, 0.16 mol) in ethyl ether (620 mL) under nitrogen was added dropwise sodium bis(2-methoxyethoxy)aluminium hydride (Red-Al®) (65 wt. % in toluene, 110 mL, 0.37 mol) at room temperature. The mixture was then heated to reflux for 1.5 hr. After cooling, the reaction mixture was quenched with water (500 mL) at 0° C. and the aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel column to afford the title compound.
