PROCEDURE

To a solution of trans-(4-methylcyclohexyl)methanol (3.00 g, 23.4 mmol) and tert-butyl 5-chloro-2,4-difluorobenzoate (6.43 g, 25.90 mmol) in anhydrous dimethylsulfoxide (40 mL) was added cesium carbonate (16.11 g, 49.44 mmol). The mixture was heated at 70° C. for 96 hours, and then cooled to ambient temperature; diluted with water (300 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (4×100 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with water (100 mL) and brine (100 mL); dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate; filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by column chromatography (0% to 10% ethyl acetate in hexanes gradient) to give the title compound (6.48 g 78%): 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.87 (d, J=7.7 Hz, 1H), 6.61 (d, J=12.3 Hz, 1H), 3.82 (d, J=6.2 Hz, 2H), 1.91-1.73 (m, 8H), 1.56 (s, 9H), 1.17-0.96 (m, 5H).
