A 1M aqueous solution of KOH (2.2 mL) was added to a solution of (E)-ethyl 3-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-3-yl)acrylate (0.19 g, 0.88 mmol) in EtOH:THF (1:1 v/v) (10 mL). The resulting solution was heated at 50° C. for 3 h. After completion of the reaction the reaction mixture was evaporated and water (10 mL) was added to the residue. This solution was carefully acidified to pH 4 with a 3 M HCl aqueous solution. Since the product, (E)-3-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-3-yl)acrylic acid, was soluble in water, the solution was concentrated under reduced pressure and the solid residue was used directly for the next step.
