Procedure

To a solution of piperidine-4-carboxylic acid (10.0 g, 77.4 mmol) and Na2CO3 (8.21 g, 77.4 mmol) in water (100 mL) was added a solution of benzyl 2,5-dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl carbonate (19.3 g, 77.4 mmol) in MeCN (100 mL). The reaction was stirred at ambient temperature for about 16 h and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting aqueous solution was quenched with NH4Cl and was then extracted with EtOAc (2×100 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried over anhydrous Na2SO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 1-(benzyloxycarbonyl)piperidine-4-carboxylic acid as a white solid (4.56 g, 22%): LC/MS (Table 2, Method a) Rt=1.93 min; MS m/z: 262 (M−H)−.
