7-Bromo-4-fluoro-9-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)-2-methoxy-9H-xanthen-9-ol (10 g, 25.6 mmol) was dissolved in 100 ml of benzene and thionyl chloride (18.66 ml, 256 mmol) was added. The solution was refluxed for 4 hours. The reaction was then concentrated to afford 2-(7-bromo-9-chloro-4-fluoro-2-methoxy-9H-xanthen-9-yl)-1H-imidazole (10 g, 24.41 mmol).
