(E,E,E,E)-3,7-dimethyl-9-(2,4,5-trimethyl-3-furyl)-2,4,6,8-nonatetraenoic acid ethyl ester (16 g.) was dissolved in methanol (100 ml.) containing potassium hydroxide (10 g.) and water (20 ml.) and the resulting mixture was heated at reflux for 1 hour. On cooling, a potassium salt crystallized out. This was filtered off, washed with methanol and crystallized from isopropanol-water to give pure potassium (E,E,E,E)-3,7-dimethyl-9-(2,4-dimethyl-3-furyl)-2,4,6,8-nonatetraenoate, m.p. 265°-70° (dec.).
