Reaction Steps

A mixture of 25 g of 2-mercaptopyridine, 70 ml of dimethylacetamide and 45.7 g of 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrochlorobenzene was heated at 80° to 90° C. and 35 g of 40% NaOH aq. solution was added to the mixture. After the reaction, the reaction mixture was poured into water and the product was extracted with ethyl ether and the ether phase was washed with a dilute NaOH aq. solution and then, with water and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate and ether was distilled off to obtain 52 g of 2-trifluoromethyl-4-(pyridine-2-ylthio) nitrobenzene.
