Procedure
8.8 g of 2-methyl-5-(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole and 7.7 g of 1-methyl-5-nitroimidazole-2-carboxaldehyde are heated with 0.2 g of ZnCl2 in a mixture of 50 ml of glacial acetic acid and 25 ml of acetic anhydride for 6 hours at reflux temperature. After cooling, the precipitated solid is suction filtered, washed with concentrated ammonia and recrystallized from dimethylformamide. The melting point of the product obtained is 240°-241° C.
